TBI and pre-existing psych problems

Post a new topicby SueRN524 on Sun Sep 06, 2009 10:49 pm

Husband has severe TBI resulting from motorcycle accident. Behavioral problems are borderline unmanageable. Prior to accident he was diagnosed with Bipolar depression, etc... could the pre existing psych diagnoses make the behavioral problems now with TBI worse?
We cannot seem to find the right cocktail to stabilize him. His behaviors include sexual disinhibition, screaming, yelling, EXTREME anxiety Thanks

Hi there,

I suffered a severe TBI in January 2005, terrible car accident no seatbelt was thrown through the windshield landed 30 feet from my car which was cut in two. I was in intensive care for 7 days and then 2 more moths in the hospital, I had micro bleeds on the brain.

I was diagnosed Bi polar, Panic disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder many years before the accident and was treating with prozac and risperdal. In the first year after leaving the hospital my moods went off the charts, so I started seeing my psychiatrist again and he changed my meds to Effexor, risperdal, and xanax which I must say has done a good job of keeping me at cruising altitude.

All I can say is that since my car accident I have not been the same person, try to be very understanding with your loved one.

Thanks Charles for the response. So I guess then pre existing stuff does complicate TBI recovery.
Seems like meds make things worse, not sure what to do. he doesnt respond "normally" to them, seems to have opposite effects. Hang in there, Sue
