Does stress bring on vertigo attacks?

Post a new topicby HPatricia on Wed Aug 06, 2008 2:04 pm

It took me a couple of days of feeling miserable before I realized I was having another vertigo episode. My medication had run out about 6 weeks ago, I requested a refill from my pharmacy and they faxed my doctor's office for a refill but it was never completed-they are very las about refills. Anyway, my quest is, can stress trigger an episode/attack?

My doctor told me that stress can very easily bring on vertigo attacks. He also told me that medications such as xanax and other meds used to control anxiety and stress can also actually make the vertigo worse. He said the meds give you a false sense of relief from both the stress and the vertigo but it actually can make the vertigo bouts worse in the long run.

your post was very interesting-I am presently taking paxil (generic of course, thanks to insurance). I am just a real mess. Between my vertigo and sugar dumping syndrome. I don't know what to do. I am nauseous most of the time even tho I am taking meclazine; so, I don't eat right and now I am passing out from sugar lows. Ready to give up on it all.

I know this vertigo crap is the most frustrating thing in the world. I have been dealing with it for a little over 4 years now and it can be very difficult trying to cope with it. I went through periods when i first started getting symptoms that everyone i know thought i was making this up and didn't want to work or do anything. I have had a job since i was 10 years old and i am 41 now and have always worked. Due to vertigo i lost a very high paying job and have had to take a job making about 1/3 of what i was making before my vertigo. You can't give up believe me i know what you are going through and the way you are feeling. You just wish that things would go back to normal. It is very hard to try to get through it. But you got to stay positive and do everything in your power to try and beat this. You really need to look at your situation and assess some things.
1. Do you smoke? cause nicotine can help trigger the bouts.
2. Salt intake. You need to go on a low sodium diet cause salt can also cause fluid retention making your vertigo happen more often.
3. Exercise. I know at times it may be impossible but you need to do some walking outdoors. And maybe some light weight training this will help also.
4. Vestibular exercises. Talk to your doctor or do some searching on the net and find some different vestibular exercises. These will help tremendously. They will probably make you a little dizzy but you have to stick with it and try to get through it.
I really wish you the best of luck and hopefully you can beat this. Just hang in there and try to stay positive even though it is hard to do. Also maybe have your doctor change your medicine. I had problems with meclazine so my doctor switched me to phenergan and it has helped me out much better than the meclazine. I hope this helps you and please keep us updated with your progress

Hello, have you seen an ent dr.? I was diagnosed with bppv and he performed the epley maneuver and has me doing vestibular rehabilitation exercises. I was retested by the dr. and the dizziness did not come back but I am having a problem with lightheadness. The epley maneuver might help you if you haven't had it already.

thank you so much for your positive input. I had been OK for a long time, but due to trusting my best friend staying in my home with her children while I went to my daughter's aide 2000 miles away, my home is now in foreclosure and I am not sure that I can stop it. I earn enough working from home, if your are interested, let me know and iI will pass the info on-anyway, due to her negligence and lack of respect for me, Right after I got home the phones were turned off due to non-pay, water sut off along with elec, on and on-it took 2 months to get phone back on so the bank is still factoring those 2 months in with my wages and therefore foreclosure. Only told you this so that you can understand the stress I am experiencing 9and I can't find her any where. I can't believe that phenegran works. It is now coming and going but at a much slower pace-I know that the meclazine sometime affect my eyes and if my invisabile lines in glasses are not just right-well I don't have to tell you!

Well again ty and you have given me some hope. Do you have it all the time or does it come and go. I can't even swing just a little, or if I am up high, I can't look down-can't ride amusement rides and even bumpy streets sometimes affect me. What a life and yes, everyone thinks you are crazy or that your elevator does not go to the top floor.

I think your doctor is wrong about the meds...Xanax does not make the Vertigo worse...it doesn't necessarily stop or help the acute vertigo symptoms, but when you have vertigo it makes you feel upset and anxious, and so the Xanax helps with those symptoms. Do these doctors have any idea what they are talking about? Unless they've suffered from vertigo they have no clue what it feels like...good luck to you!

I have a crazy question for you...... I was reading your post and saw that you work from home. I may have mis understood what you were saying but I was wondering if you could give me any info on what you do and does it work? I hope your vertigo is better and I will keep you in my prayers. I to strugle with this.

Thank you,
Jennifer Thompson
