New to vertigo...Hi everyone!
I was just told I have vertigo last night by an ER doc after being rushed over to the ER by an urgent care doc. I was given Valium, Meclizine, and some other medicine related to phernergan that made me mean as a snake. My CT scan came back clear and I was sent home with a prescription for Meclizine and Valium and told to get to a neurologist next week. My symptoms of spinning that comes on and off every few minutes for no rhyme or reason have gotten progressively worse over the past month with and have become nearly debilitating as of this past weekend. I also have this strange feeling like my lips are swollen, but they aren't at all, they just feel really heavy and tingly. I revoked my own drivers license on Wednesday night as I felt like I am a danger to myself and others on the road. I have been taking Meclizine and Valium every 6 and 8 hours respectively and thus far I have found no relief whatsoever. The only thing I have noticed different is my legs are aching horribly (which I blame on my fibromyalgia flaring up from lack of restful sleep from being stuck in the ER half the night) and ofcourse I'm a bit tired. I'm wondering how long it normally takes for either of these medicines to start to have some positive effect. I've been kind of out of it for the past few days, but I'm pretty sure the doc at the urgent care said that Meclizine should start to work within 25 minutes though I'm still not sure that she fully knew what she was talking about. Can anyone tell me about how long it took for their symptoms to start to go away after starting medications? I apologize for the length of this post...I'm still having trouble getting all of my thoughts out so I keep ending up over explaining everything. Thanks in advance for responses!!!
Re: New to vertigo...I was diagnosed with BPPV (Benign positional vertigo). Had it for over 6 months. Finally got a referral to a vestibular (inner ear) rehab clinic. After one visit, my symptoms seemed to almost disappear completely. When I first got the symptoms, my doctors also prescribed meclazine. This what they give to releave disiness. But it only masking the symptoms, not curing the source .
BPPV is casused by calcium crystals in the inner ear that free float out of thier normal position causing the vertigo. The vestibular rehab attempts to get the crystals back to where they belong. It worked for me.
