New to Vertigo

Post a new topicby TijgerStrepen on Wed Nov 05, 2008 2:39 pm

Hello.. About 3 weeks ago, I started getting dizziness that would lessen and worsen, but remain constant. One day that week, I had alot of pain when swallowing. That's when I decided to call the doctor. They couldn't get me in until 4 days later. By then, the pain of swallowing ceased to very little. I thought maybe I had tonsilitis as I had that earlier this year, or I might've been pregnant. My doctor tested for tonsilitis and strep then sent me for blood test for pregnancy. All came back negative. He assumed I had an infection, but couldn't tell me what type. He prescibed me amoxicillan.

I took the antibiotic for 5 days and my symptoms were getting worse. I started to get nauseau and ended up leaving work early this past Saturday to go to the ER. The doctor there diagnosed me with Vertigo and THINKS it's caused by a viral inner ear infection. They gave me 4 days' worth of Antivert which has been helping the symptoms. Although, in between doses, I still have 1 to 2 hrs of dizziness and nauseau. I have made another appointment for tomorrow morning with my doctor because I run out of the Antivert tonight.

I am getting very worried as to what might be causing this. If it is a viral infection, how long should it last? I have had chronic middle ear infections in my right ear as far back as I can remember, though haven't had one in almost 2 years now. Other than swimmer's ear last year. I have never experienced Vertigo before, and it has been constant the last 3 weeks. Without the Antivert, I wouldn't be able to function at work. Hopefully my doctor will actually run some tests to find the cause rather than whip out his pen and pad again. I might be in the market for a new doctor, if so.
