Vertigo is driving me mad

Post a new topicby yvette1 on Mon Aug 10, 2009 2:37 pm

Hi glad to have discovered this sight... I got my first experience of Vertigo last Oct.. no spinning just felt like head was away from my body and feel done. This was bad for two days so get antibis from doc and serc 16.. Then got it back again and still have it.. get a good week now and then and its bliss. I get more of a pull than spins. I now know when I can walk with it and when I cant or just wont take the chance.. I now say I have a 20% pull mostly every day and then get the bad attacks when I cant walk at all. Ive began to notice that I get ringing in the ears after a attack. My bloods are all ok so I went to a ENT 2 wks ago.. of course when I got my appointment I was having a good day.. Had ultrasound of neck last week and have audiology exam tommorrow - although I must say my hearing is fine. I am ringing my ENT for some medication.. he originally asked if I wanted something however he said it could make me drowsy etc.. so I said id leave it.. need something now though... hopefully it goes away soon as its interfering with my life

Vertigo tends to be quite disabling at times. Mostly, it is due to dysfunction in the inner ears but other times may be due to balance center problems. I would recommend that your ENT send you either to an inner ear specialist for inner ear testing, called videonystagmography if not already done or an Neurologist. Based upon these results, an MRI of the brain may be indicated. Otherwise, treatment options include vestibular therapy through a physical therapist versed in this condition. It's thought that the tiny crystals in the inner ears fall off from infection, injury or from use. They then form a sludge in the small canals leading to imbalance with movement. The exercises help to move that sludge along to rebalance the ears. The medications, such as meclizine though helpful can lead to drowsiness limiting its use.

Hope this his helpful.

Thanks for your reply.. I just saw my ENT earlier and I am now on Stemetil 5mg .. hope these tabs have no major side affects.. I also had an MRI a couple of months ago and thats clear. I had audilogy test today and only had a little trouble with left ear but nothing serious.. I had ultrasound of my carotide artery last week and my ENT had no results yet. I am waiting to attend his dizzzy clinic and then he will call me back after that. I was talking to a girl in the waiting room and she also has same thing. I have never heard so many people with vertigo in the last year-- must be some viral thing that came in.. Years ago youd hear of only a few people with it.

Anyway thank you for replying - hopefully tabs will take the edge of it and Ill be able to go for my walks again.. Postive thinking is the only way

Good luck with the meds. Let's see what happens with treatment in the dizzy clinic. I believe that the exercises would also be helpful.
