Newly Diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy

Post a new topicby livingwith on Fri Feb 20, 2009 4:40 pm

I have had a few unexplained problems during the last several years. It wasn’t until the symptoms continuously hit me in Dec. 2008, that I started to get some answers. I have had a nerve test and some blood work done. I have been told that I have peripheral neuropathy because my blood tests showed that I am “slightly” low on vitamin D. I find it hard to believe that the extent of the pain I have been experiencing would be caused by a “slight” vitamin deficiency. I ...Read the full article

I too have just been diagnosed with neuropathy. I have a herniated cervical disk c5 and c6 and I think this is causing most of my problems. My RA prescriped Gabapentin 300 mg, this is supposed to relieve the pain in both my fingers and knee. I was also diagnosed with antiphospholipid syndrome this is a blood clotting disorder my anticardiolipin IGM is 60 and I just have to take aspirin to keep this under wraps. Do you think that surgery to remove herniation would relieve this neuropathy issue. I only seem to experience pain when its cold or raining. Sometimes, I lose the feeling in my fingers when its really cold?

Hi...
I am a newbie here and wanted to reply to your post. I too suffer from Neuropathy. Mine is caused by nerve damage fron a spine surgery i had in 95. Scar tissue from the surgery is impenging on the nerves in my lumbar spine...L4 7 L5. I have rods and screws there also. My pain is in both feet and legs fron my knees down into my feet. The pain is savage!!
But to answer your question. Yes, you can get Neroupathy fron low vitamin D and yes, it is very, very painfull no matter what has caused it, the pain is the same.
I do advise you to have your pc doctor refer you to a Neurologist. He can do a nerve conduction test and order more extensive blood tests. You may find your Vitamin D is lower than you think. I for one do not trust the blood tests I get at my pc doctors office. My pc Doctor ordered a blood test to see if my B12 was OK. It showed it to be fine. My Nerologist ordered a blood test for me and it showed my B12 was low!!
As you know vitamins do take time to work but you should start seeing improvement soon if you have not already. I see this was posted in Feb.
I do hope you are better now. I understand just how you feel. I have been down that painfull road myself. Please let us know how you are doing.
Best of luck and may the sun always shine for you.
